What better image to show than that of Christiaan Barnard, doctor of hearts and pioneer transplant surgeon. Born and trained in South Africa he honed his surgical skills in America before performing his first human-to-human heart transplant.
International fame and superstardom followed as he performed more operations with an increasing success rate. Appropriately, in retirement he established a foundation dedicated to helping underprivileged children.
