On March 17th 1845, Londoner Stephen Perry unleashed a power on the world by patenting the elastic band. They are now produced in their millions, with the world's biggest user being the American Postal service.
Although three quarters of the world's rubber is synthetic, rubber bands are still made from natural rubber for its superior elasticity.
Rubber band is also a slang term for a rich dude, who carries his cash around in a bundle secured by a rubber band.
