The World's first automatic emergency telephone service opened up on June 28th 1937, using the easily recognised number, 999.
The first ever call came in at 4:20 a.m. on July 1st, when Mr. Stanley Beard of Hampstead, spotted a leg disappearing though one of his downstairs windows.
999 was dialed and a police patrol car raced to the spot to arrest burglar Thomas Duffy four minutes later.
Today 2000 staff deal with 14,000 calls a day at a cost of £98 million.
Hops used are Beata & Challenger.
